What's the appeal of the fear linked with creepy stories?

The earliest horror movies were Gothic in style - meaning that they were frequently set in spooky old mansions, castles, or fog-shrouded, dark settings. Their main characters have included an "unknown," person, supernatural or monstrous scary creatures, ranging from vampires, demented madmen, devils, evil spirts, monsters, mad scientists, "Frankensteins," "Jekyll/Hyde" dualities (good against evil), demons,, Satanic villains, the "possessed," werewolves and other entiities to even the unseen, presence of evil.  http://www.filmsite.org/horrorfilms.html

What's the appeal of the fear linked with creepy stories? "There's a long history of people being intensely interested and curious about the 'dark side, in horror movies and trying to make sense of it," says Frank Farley, PhD,a  psychologist at Temple University. "Through movies, we're able to see horror in front of our eyes, and a lot of people are tremendously fascinated by it.
